CODE The Loft Reopens with the UK’s First Full-Height Japanese Capsules
CODE The Loft on Rose Street has reopened its doors following an extensive refurbishment, unveiling what is now the UK’s first full-height Japanese capsule beds. Originally launched in 2014 and recognised as Edinburgh’s first capsule bed accommodation, The Loft is once again pushing boundaries in hybrid accommodation with a new design-forward capsule experience inspired by Tokyo.
The new capsules are part of a new penthouse four bed female-only dorm, offering access to a private roof terrace overlooking central Edinburgh.
The innovative capsules take strong inspiration from a 2025 research trip to Japan undertaken by CODE’s founder and managing director, Andrew Landsburgh, and the team. The team spent their time in Tokyo staying in different capsule hotels each night, including Resol Poshtel and The Millennials, returning with a clear ambition to bring a new level of comfort and privacy to Edinburgh.
“Visiting Tokyo’s capsule hotels was genuinely transformative,” says Andrew Landsburgh. “We loved the feeling of the full height capsules, it was like having your own small room, private and peaceful, without sacrificing quality or comfort. That trip made it clear that we could bring something truly special back to Edinburgh. These new capsules blend Japanese inspiration with everything we’ve learned from running capsule accommodation for more than a decade.”
The new capsules at The Loft are designed to create a spacious and serene micro-room for each guest. Thoughtfully built for modern day travellers, each capsule includes a built in phone holder for comfortable handsfree viewing, along with adjustable extract fan to maintain fresh air throughout the night.
Comfort has been a major focus of the redesign. CODE commissioned a custom mattress made from natural, breathable materials to regulate body temperature across the seasons, paired with luxury hypoallergenic duck feather duvets to improve sleep quality. The capsules have also been engineered to significantly reduce noise, creating a calm and peaceful environment.
Practicality was also a priority during the refurb. Each capsule includes a secure digital locker for valuables and an oversized underbed storage space with built in lighting for easy access. Guests can also make use of multiple charging options, including a UK three pin socket, USB and USBC, to keep all devices powered throughout their stay.
“We designed these capsules to feel like a true home from home,” says Jamie Greig, Head of Projects & Design at CODE, who led the project’s detailed development. “Every detail came from real experience, staying in capsules of every shape and size over the years and asking ourselves what we always wished they had. From the acoustic insulation to the storage lighting, to the custom mattress and the extra hooks, it’s all about making travel feel easier, calmer and more personal. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve created.”
The softness of the space has been enhanced through interior designer Pamela Mackay, who also helped refine the look of the new Dorm.
Beyond the capsules, The Loft has undergone a wider transformation. All capsule dorms have been refreshed, while the bathrooms have been fully modernised. The building also features new outdoor signage that reflects CODE’s updated branding introduced late last year.
With this relaunch, CODE The Loft not only reaffirms its status as a pioneer of modern urban hostel in Edinburgh, it positions itself at the forefront of capsule accommodation in the UK, offering travellers a thoughtful blend of innovation, privacy and comfort inspired by Tokyo but distinctly shaped by Edinburgh’s character.
