Local Artist Spotlight: Meet Victoria

The Loft is newly refurbished and now features the work of some local artists! Meet Victoria, one of the artists featured.

Can you tell us a little about the artwork that is now displayed in CODE The Loft?

My illustrations that are displayed in The Loft are from my collection of Edinburgh prints, featuring some of the well-loved streets and landmarks of the city. They are hand-drawn digital illustrations, meaning that I use my iPad and apple pencil to bring them to life in a drawing. I love focusing on small details that show the buildings character – thankfully there is plenty of it in Edinburgh!

What inspired you to create this particular piece?

I love the colours of Victoria Street so that instantly drew me in. I also love a challenge with an illustration, and the beautiful curved road lined with an array of colourful and unique shops, restaurants and cafes certainly brings a challenge! I just knew this would be an an exciting piece to draw!

How did you get started as an artist?

I have always been creative and knew I would end up doing something in this line of work. I moved to Edinburgh to study illustration at Edinburgh College of Art, where I was introduced to different types of projects and creative techniques. I think this is where my journey really started. I often developed work I created on my course into products, making prints and cards to sell at markets. It kind of snowballed from there really and I’ve since had the opportunity to collaborate on some really exciting projects.

What’s your favourite place in Edinburgh?

I’m not sure can choose just one, but I love the different pockets of independent shops and cafes that Edinburgh has to offer. A few of my favourite areas include Stockbridge, Broughton Street and Bruntsfield. They each offer something unique and are definitely worth visiting as many of these areas as you can.

Do you have a hidden gem in the city you’d recommend to people staying at CODE?

I absolutely love a walk up Blackford Hill. It’s a wee bit outside of the city centre, but if you can get there on a clear day, the views looking back into the city are unbeaten. You can see the castle, Arthur’s seat, and for miles out to sea. On a really clear day, you can sometimes even see hints of the Bass Rock at North Berwick in the distance.

For something easily accessible within the city, the rooftop garden at the top of the National Museum of Scotland is also a must!

Where can people find more of your work – online or locally?

My website is the place to find my full range of products, over at my website.

I also have a handful of local stockists around Edinburgh – The Red Door Gallery on Victoria Street, An Independent Zebra in Stockbridge, Eden on Cockburn Street and RAF in Bruntsfield where you can find a selection of my products amongst lots of other local makers.

What are you excited to be working on next?

Last year I worked with Rosslyn Chapel on updating their artwork. It was the first official artwork they had commissioned since the 1600’s so I was truly honoured to be chosen for this! We then developed it into a range of pin badges and keyrings. After a successful first run, they are looking to expand the range into more products, including wooden magnets. So I will be working with them to develop a full collection!

What’s one local experience you think every visitor should try at least once while they’re in Edinburgh?

A visit to Stockbridge market on a Sunday is a must!
